Carp Fishing In France Etang De Villaine French Paradise

Well I suppose I should start this piece of with a comment I said to a couple of friends of mine a while back now which was, I will never go carp fishing in France.  Well after a number of conversations with the same group of friends they pursued me to go with them to a venue called Etang De Villiane, we had hear this was a fantastic venue and offered some of the best carp fishing in france.  I did some research and endless phone calls later with the fishery owner, I felt I had all the information I needed to make this trip a success.  I have to say that in my mind I had the same thought patterns as many people that go carp fishing in France, well it will be easy and I’ll catch loads.  Well after talking to people this idea soon went and my thought pattern was more of a case that if I didn’t blank it was a result.  The day of the trip came and after loading the car with all our stuff, there was just enough room for me and my mate in the back.  All we talked about on the way there was what we were going to do, what we would like to catch, and how hard would the carp fishing in france be?  Well the ferry crossing and the 5.5 hour drive seemed to go in a blink of an eye because upon looking out the window we turned into the driveway.  Wow I thought what views and setting this place had, huge rolling valleys and bright blue skies.  I looked at my mate and said this is amazing, and yet the best was yet to come, we drove round the back of the house and parked the car, and what greeted us was hills, woodland, meadows and a stunning lake, I said to myself if this is what carp fishing in france is all about I want more!.  Well I was screaming to get the stuff out the car, all I wanted to do was go for a walk around.  We got a fantastic warm welcome by Jan who made us a drink and told us about what had been happening on the lake the week before.  The fishing had been up and down, 30 runs but only 13 fish landed, in honesty I thought if that’s indifferent imagine what this place is like when it goes mental, was I excited about our carp fishing in france trip.  We drove the car down to the swims and I had to just sit and take in the surroundings, the large wooded area to my right, rolling hills to my rear and meadows leading up to the house straight in front.  I thought to myself, I had found angling paradise and wondered why I had waited so long to go carp fishing in france, little did I know what was awaiting me later in the week.

 

My swim was one that apparently was the worst on the lake,(but when you are carp fishing in france at Etang De Villiane there are no bad pegs!) this I found hard to believe good view of open water out in front, lovely shaded margin to my left, and a large willow out towards the opposite bank.  I already knew how I was going to tackle the carp fishing in france venue.  I am a massive fan of PVA bag fishing and I have friends who use this method all the time when they go carp fishing in france. I believe it is the only way to introduce a attractive area around my hook bait and know that you get a great rig presentation each time.  To start with I decided to fish one rod to the fallen about 1 rod length of the bank, this was a comfortable chuck of 35 yards.  Then I placed two rods out in open water, as I had seen a lot of fish activity out in front.  I found nice area with the marker float, again about 40yards out, a small trench which went from 6.5 ft, down to 8ft, then back up to 6.5 foot, all in the space of 6 ft.  I spread about two kilo of bollies in the area and sat back getting more excited by the minute.  My friend Simon fishing on the opposite bank was using bags as well, but over a small spodded area.

 

After all the disturbance, I didn’t expect to see much, but within a couple of hours of all the rods being cast and baiting up been completed the fish started to show themselves in the shallow water at the far end of the lake.  Later in the afternoon/early evening there was a couple of runs to John (Simon’s dad) who landed a couple of carp and cats to just under thirty pounds.  In the night Simon also had a couple of takes which left me questioning if I had chosen the right tactics.   Well, in the early hours of the morning I got my answer, I had a run on the rod fishing near the fallen willow in the distance, after a spirited scrap my prize was in the net.  I ran round to Simon to asked him to do some photo’s, and upon arriving back in the swim, my middle rod fishing in open water rattled off, carp fishing in france can be like this so people were telling me, this fish felt smaller and hardly put up a fight, (I was thinking in my head I’m glad I asked Stuart for two nets), I lifted the fish onto the mat, and looked at Simon to say what a start to our carp fishing in france trip, then my last remaining rod that was still fishing rattled off, I couldn’t believe it and nor could Simon.  This fish again fought like a demon and I didn’t think I would land it, then it dawned on me I had one fish in one net, the other net was collapsed and a fish on the mat, Simon said what are we going to do, I said okay I’ll have to land it with the other fish in the net, (now please be aware unless your are experienced and confident do not do this!!!).  With the help of Simon we weighted each fish, and photo’s were done, for the record two were upper 20’s the other was 30.05lb, create result, first thirty from this venue on my first night. I could not believe that was happening, don’t get me wrong I had heard tales of carp going crazy and it often happens on some venues when you are carp fishing in france, but I couldn’t believe it was happening to me!

 

 

 

 

I was over the moon, and what a start to our carp fishing in france trip, as you can imagine I got no sleep, no further action happened, but what a start.  Breakfast was a happy place as you can imagine, as I talked about the action and to be honest I thought I heard other buzzers in the night, but myself and Simon were the only people to catch.   Using small PVA bags accompanied with a seed mix and pellet, we had been told this method could be deadly when carp fishing in france.  The open water spot was baited with 3 kilo of bollie.  Rigs themselves were very simple as always if honest, 5 inch braided hook link, to a size 6 grabba hook blowback style with a run ring.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I wasn’t just using the bags, I used a bait boat which was provided by Stuart at the fishery, which was filled with the seed mix, pellet and crushed bollies, to be honest we could have got away without using a bait boat but the ones Stuart has can carry a lot of bait and we were dropping our rigs out with the bait, this proved deadly and I believe was a major factor in the number of fish we caught. I know carp fishing in france can be like this but Etang De Villaine really did the business for us and we were having the carp fishing in france trip of a lifetime.

 

This type of carp fishing in france is new to me, but allowed me to bait in such a tight and accurate manor, the presentation was excellent.  Well over the next few days, the action came thick and fast, I could not get a bite in the day and again people had told me this can happen when carp fishing in france, but at night all hell would break lose, I had lost a couple of fish though and this concerned me, so I decided to shorten my rig even further, so the hook link was now just over two inches long.  Now most people would laugh or question am I insane, but think about it for a minute these carp have big mouths, and the reason PVA bag presentations are so effect is because the carp are sucking up the entire pile of food, bait, hook link and yes even the lead.  This is a bold statement I know, but on the third night after shorting the rig down, I received a thunderous take from the willow spot, and after what felt like an eternity I slipped the net under what I knew was a very big fish.  The mirror went just over 36lb my biggest carp fishing in france so far, but the hook was well inside the month and the lead was bouncing around the lips of the carp, which proved for that hook bait to be taken the lead and the rig went into its mouth and on ejection the rig did its job….. that will give you something to think about the next time you go carp fishing in france or in the UK!.

 

The night was not going to end there either, shortly after that great fish, my greatest dreams came true with a massive 40.5lb mirror, which again had a hook hold which was hard to believe possible.  It just shows, have confidence in your baiting strategy, rigs and your watercraft, and when everything falls into place, there is nothing stopping the lumps coming to the bank when you are carp fishing in france.

 

Now at this point I have to say this carp fishing in france trip was going better than I could have imagined and after many conversations with the other anglers on the water, everyone was telling me you are going to empty the lake.  That is not the case there is a fantastic stock in the venue, very well balanced, the only thing that was missing was I hadn’t hooked into one of the big catfish that live in this amazing lake.  With that said I should explain that Simon hooked a huge Catfish, which unfortunately fell off right by the bank after I had tried to glove it out.  I saw the fight which it gave Simon and the only way could describe it is that you had just hooked a raging bull on steroids!!!!!!!!!!!!.  Well on the Thursday morning I woke to a take which upon picking the rod up I knew it was a Catfish, I know I was carp fishing in france but let me tell you this was no carp!  fast runs, a lot of weight and many tale patterns on the surface.  This thing went crazy and after an hour playing it, (john) offered to glove it out, and a fine job he did of it.  It was the biggest thing I have ever seen on the bank, this Catfish weighted 61.5oz and what a beast, now I was carp fishing in france and catching monster Cats!

This was not to be the end, because later the same day, the same rod was off and another hour long fight produced another massive Catfish this time 62.03lb and what a creature this carp fishing in france trip will live long in my memory and with still two days left I could see how this action could continue.

 

This lake was producing fish all over now and the carp fishing in france was really living up to its’ name. Simon and the other lads had started catching amounts of carp now, to just under 34lb and they to were so excited by this carp fishing in france trip.  I was physically exhausted in the 6 days we had been carp fishing in france, I slept no more than 6 hours.  When you get tactics right and everything falls into place sessions like this can happen when you are carp fishing in france, but I just didn’t expect to catch as many as I did.  The week ended with me catching 23 fish, 1 x40 , 9×30’s 3x catfish to 62lb and 10x 20’s.  Which by anyone’s imagination is a fantastic haul, with some stunning scenes and the best carp fishing in france by  along way.

We sit in our own little world giving it a try

It’s nice in the summer but that has to pass

As in comes winter with an icy blast,

This is were people think we are mad

But nothing really changes except for the weather!

We will sit there in our bivvy in rain and snow

When that happens its nice to have people there that you know,

But the feelings the same just a bit more hardship

Waiting for a scream and the line to strip

All of a sudden the world you are in disappears like you have been to sleep

As you get that one single beep,

Its raining hailing cold as hell

And then you realize your kettles boiling as well

You go to switch the stove off but before you do

Your alarm makes another bleep like its watching you,

You race to the rod, hit it and you are met

With a tightening of the line and you forget about the wet

The fish starts to move and scream across the lake

Congratulations mate you have got a winter take,

Your heart starts to pound as the fight starts

Its raining and freezing now people really do think you’re daft

As you rushed out you forgot your coat, oh well you will just get soaked

All your worried about is the fish that’s all that matters,

It runs left then right and pulls like a carp

Now getting cold and wet does not seem so daft

Your soaked to the skin and very wet

But that does not matter as you grab your net

The fish it tires and moves ever closer!

This is the moment when you think the worst

Will it get off with a short sharp burst?

So you ease off the strain and play it real slow

O bloody hell it’s now beginning to snow

Then all of a sudden you see its back

And its dawned on you and it is a fact,

That you’re wet, cold, soaked and it’s not your dream

And all you have is a four pound bream!

Dejected and cold you free it and put it back

Your dreams are shattered but its worse than that,

The kettle was still boiling and now is dry

With a hole in the bottom you think why o why

Is re-cast the rod like all good carp anglers do,

This poem I believe summarises carp fishing and my trip.  The lake and fishing was out of this world Stuart and Jane the owners have worked so hard to produce a fishery with Character and fishing to which people of all standards can enjoy.  The fish fight hard and are in fantastic condition.  All the swims on the lake are provided with landings nets, unhooking mats and weight slings.  This is to help stop the transfer of disease and keep all the stock healthy for the future.  There are only a few times in a carp anglers life where he could honestly say that .
